Something wild happened between the last newsletter and this one. Two wild things. I sold out of the first print run of Last Stop within a week of the pub date. If you missed it, and need some grief poems for your National Poetry Month reading list, there is a limited second run you can order here. I also defended my MFA thesis? Yay poetry!
Things I’ve been reading in lit mags:
The March issue of Split Lip Magazine. I especially love Geetha Iyer’s memoir piece “Money”
C. Meaker’s piece “S(wallow),” winner of the Porter House Review 2022–2023 Editor’s Prize in Nonfiction
This! essay! by Addie Tsai in Electric Lit, “Ask Me Whether or Not I’m Trans.” I’m really excited to see what else is published in the Both/And series.
Issue 4 of Infrarrealista Review! I’m a big fan of everything IR does. If you’re a Texas writer, check them out.
Now introducing a new segment to the already-scattered trans poetica newsletter: Succession Corner (please help me rename this? I can’t even title poems)
Last night’s episode… quite literally had be at the edge of my seat. I’m not sure why, but S4E2 made me more scared than any other episode. Logan was extra Logan. Roman was extra Roman. My immediate reaction tweet says it all.
I don’t really like to make predictions about this show in particular, but I think Willa should be the Successor. Thoughts?
Anyways, back to regularly scheduled self promotion! For April and May, I have to privilege to read with some really cool poets who I admire greatly, like Bianca Pérez, Kimmie Wolf, and KB Brookins.
I can’t wait to celebrate both Bianca’s and KB’s new poetry books, available to (pre)order here and here. And I’m beyond excited to read with my Houston poetry friends. If you’re in Texas and need to add a short, loud, Xicanx poet to your line up, I’m your guy.
Lastly, a couple of really cool opportunities I wanted to highlight:
An Undocupoets anthology is happening!!! Submissions are open through the end of the month
Sundress is having their second annual Trans/Nonbinary Writing Retreat. The retreat is all virtual, and I can’t recommend it enough. I met so many amazing people that I still keep in touch with
What’s everyone reading for National Poetry Month? First on my list is Skies by Eileen Myles 🌤
